Innovation drives success

BCF Concreting, an Indigenous-owned business based in Rockhampton, Queensland, faced a common challenge in the construction industry: the inaccuracy of traditional methods for slip-forming concrete curbs and barriers. Relying on string lines, these methods often resulted in inconsistencies, leading to wasted time, materials, and ultimately, rejected work.

Determined to overcome these limitations, Mick Davis, Founder of BCF Concreting sought a more precise and efficient solution. With the support of a $100,000 Deadly Deals grant, the company made a significant investment: a GPS guidance system for their SP25 Wirtgen slip-forming machine.

This innovative technology revolutionised their operations. The GPS guidance system dramatically improved the accuracy of the slip-forming process, reducing the tolerance to within five millimetres. This not only minimised waste and reduced the risk of rejected work but also significantly streamlined the process, leading to faster laying times and reduced labour costs.

Cementing opportunities

The impact of this technological advancement was substantial. Since implanting the new system, BCF Concreting have secured new contracts and created three new jobs, including a feedlot build contract for valued at more than $6 million.

Moreover, BCF Concreting believes they are pioneers in this field, being one of the first companies to utilise GPS technology in this specific application of concrete forming in combinations with Volumetric Batching Trucks. This pioneering spirit aligns perfectly with the company's commitment to innovation, evident in their five patented inventions and numerous industry awards.

Beyond economic growth

The impact of this innovation extends beyond economic growth. By reducing waste and increasing efficiency, BCF Concreting has also contributed to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible construction practice as well as creating pathways for First Nations businesses in the commercial world.
